Hill Street Blues Was A Police Drama That Lasted 7 Seasons. Hill Street Blues Won Many Awards During Its Run. The Show Was Suppose To Take Place In A Fictional City. The Police Station Is In Chicago And The Police Cars Have A Chicago Look To Them But Most Of The Series Was Filmed In Los Angeles. The Show Used Downtown Los Angeles A Lot And Because The Series Is Over 30 Years Old Quite A Few Locations Are Either Gone Now Or Have A Much Different Look To Them. I Will List The Filming Locations By Season On Here But So Far Only Season 1 And 2 Are Available On DVD.

If You See A Couple Of ** Next To The Episode Name In Means There Were No Locations To List.

    1. Do you remember the name of the real bar?. I remember the exterior shown in an episode and it had a palm tree in lights.

  5. I didn't realise the Hill Street station is an actual police station. I notice the roller doors (from the first shot on the has been made into a pedestrian door and the side ramp has been built on, both still have drop kerbs.

    1. Its used by the UIC campus police now. the whole area is now very different from back then. And the Station is used sometimes on Chicago PD and one block away is the Firehouse from Chicago Fire. Also near there is the medical center used for Chicago Med

  6. Does anyone remember the episode having a scene inside a bar in Marina Del Rey Ca. I think the bar was Flanigans inside Big Daddy's.

  7. Was curious as the opening for Hill Street Blues viaduct areas on the street in the background. Is that truly Chicago, or Milwaukee? Reason why is that those viaduct scenes look like Milwaukee.

  8. There was an episode from Season 3 where Joyce Davenport told Frank that the Phillies were going to be in town. This was before interleague play, so it would've been a National League town. Milwaukee was in the AL back then. From some of the streets mentioned, I used to think it was Brooklyn, but anymore, I think it was just some generic northern city.

    1. Chicago is a dual league town. Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs.

  9. Another thing. MAD magazine did a parody of the show, and one panel had a group of bikers standing around, one of them saying something to the effect of "This is filmed in Los Angeles, but everyone knows it's supposed to be Chicago." It showed drawings of palm trees. One of the writers was from Pittsburgh, and one of the neighborhoods is the Hill District, but there again, I think it was just an amalgam of several northern cities. I will say one thing, though. The city elected a black mayor right around the time Chicago elected one.
